Our Mission

WHAT'S OUR GOAL
Mission Viejo Montessori is an independent school offering a nurturing and academic program for infant, toddler, preschool, and kindergarten students. We provide a happy and secure, mixed-age environment for children ages 6 weeks through 6 years. Our programs are based upon the Montessori method. The Montessori curriculum and prepared environment encourage students to fulfill their developmental potential and become independent, self-confident learners. Each classroom has a full complement of Montessori materials and is lead by a Montessori trained teacher. The classrooms are bright and inviting, and the playground and garden areas are used by the children for recreation and nature study. Mission Viejo Montessori is centrally located in the town of Mission Viejo, California and is convenient for anyone going to and from the 5 freeway.
Our mission is to provide children and families with a safe and nurturing environment founded on the philosophical roots of Montessori education. As educators, this philosophy unravels in our classroom environment throughout our creative curriculum enabling us to foster independent, confident, academically prepared, and socially responsible citizens who will be lifelong learners. We excel at providing an all-inclusive family-like environment in these early developmental years of social, cognitive, and emotional growth.

The Montessori

WHAT WE DO

The word “Montessori” embodies the educational philosophy, teaching method, and materials developed by Dr. Maria Montessori at the beginning of the 20th century in Rome, Italy. Dr. Montessori was the first female medical doctor in Italy who, upon graduating with her medical degree, began her career observing children in the hospitals and mental institutions of Italy. What she found was a great need for education for these children which was not offered to anyone but the wealthiest families. As she continued to study children’s natural learning style, she slowly developed materials that helped the children learn on their own with very little assistance from adults.

In 1907 Dr. Montessori opened her first school for children (Casa dei Bambini or “Children’s House”) in one of the poorest districts of Rome. She further developed her materials and created an entirely new educational philosophy. Dr. Montessori’s dedication to the children is what propelled her new philosophy into educational reform. Her method became the national teaching method of Italy and teachers from around the world came to learn from her. She also traveled the globe giving speeches, setting up classrooms, training teachers, and observing children.

The Montessori philosophy has several important aspects:

  • Young minds are absorbent minds: children absorb everything around them
  • Children grow in three-year planes of development –birth-3 yrs: children develop basic skills of living; 3-6 yrs: children refine those skills; 6-9 yrs: children develop new skills as they start to explore their world; 9-12 yrs: children refine their new skills and so on to adulthood
  • Children go through sensitive periods in their development when their minds are particularly sensitive to learning certain skills
  • Children have a natural need for order, repetition, and practice with concrete exercises before moving to abstract concepts
  • Prepared teachers who are trained not only for the use of the materials, but are also prepared to give children respect, empower them to learn in their way, nurture their spirit through kindness and love, and give them time to absorb and investigate the world around them
  • The prepared environment is ready for the children to begin the learning process by drawing them to the materials. All materials are designed to foster concentration, coordination, independence, a sense of order, responsibility, and of course the particular skill being taught. The materials are grouped into 5 curriculum areas including Practical Life, Sensorial Exercises, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Cultural Arts.
